We like to be together.

Even the words make me laugh because we have all been together since March. It’s been a long time, and the uncertainty of whether or not it will happen again is looming. As we consider the fall, we have a choice to make, a mindset choice. Most of us don’t have the decision-making authority to open and close schools, but we can choose how we will react.

In the spring, the changes were extreme, new, and even exciting at times, surprising and long at others. It was like bringing home a new baby. You didn’t quite know what it was going to be like, so every day was surprising and you figured it out along the way.

This fall, if things shut down, this will be the same song and dance we experienced in the spring and have had a taste of all summer, and we are going to need to go into this choosing.

I always like to have some words prepped for when my kids approach something hard. So with school potentially starting and my kids hear adults question how long it will last and what things will look like, I am repeatedly saying, “However it lays out, we will figure it out. We like to be together.”

  • We like to be together.
  • We like to be together.
  • We like to be together.

We may need to write it repeatedly for handwriting practice in the uncertainty of the year ahead. Let’s go into this year, choosing things we know to be true. Here are some examples:

  • None of this is surprising to God.
  • He has good plans for us.
  • We can trust Him forever.
  • God knows better than we do.
  • God cares about you more than you can imagine.
  • He has things He wants to teach us every day.
  • We can tell Him anything.
  • He knows the desires of your heart.
  • You are safe with Him.

Let’s head into this season choosing, because sometimes we lead with our mouths and our hearts follow.
