After a great day on vacation, my cousin always says the same thing…

“You know what we are going to do tomorrow? We are going to do this…but slower.”

As quarantine restrictions begin to lift, a friend of mine asked what our reentry was going to look like. My cousin’s mantra came to mind. Gradually we will return to our things…but slower.

That will mean we proceed with caution physically when it comes to large gatherings for health reasons but, equally important, it’s also how we will proceed when it comes to our hearts.

As life came to a slow, I saw my kids settle. I watched them build forts and make up handshakes, I saw them get bored and allow their minds to wander and dream.

So as we talk about what tomorrow will look like, and the day after that and the day after that, I want to protect our health, but I also want to protect our hearts. I don’t want our hearts to return to the cluttered and the rushed. The self-inflicted hurry that pulled at my soul and spilled over onto my kids.

As we reenter after this quarantine, I’m going to be asking God to hold us steady. So returning to life, we’re going to do this but slower. That is the mantra and the way we are going to proceed with our steps and with our hearts.
