Sometimes you have to climb the rock.

We visited Rocky Mountain National Park this summer. As we drove, the steep rocks on each side of the road seemed immovable. I tried to consider some pictures of God, but my heart felt discouraged. At times during this season, I have felt like the pandemic is squeezing in on us from both sides.

I know my life is built on the rock of God’s truth, firm and solid, but circumstances right now feel as immovable as the rocks, steep and right next to the road, leaving few options.

As I ran later that week, I saw a tree growing out of the middle of a rock. It was firmly planted and gleaming with the sun shining off of its branches.

Grow where you are planted.

I climbed up the rock to give it a better look, and behind the tree, protected and safe, was a small bunch of purple flowers.

Sometimes we have to climb the rock.

When we aren’t sure what God is up to, even when we are planted firmly in His foundation but He has begun to feel distant, or if we just plain want to follow Him, sometimes we have to climb the rock to see what God has for us.

This time of rapid change may have our hearts feeling a bit callused. Driving by the rock was just too fast. Sometimes we have to climb it to see what God might have there.

As fall begins, it may take more intention this year. We may need to mark the time, choose to be intentional, and climb the rock. God may have sweet protected flowers tucked right behind the tree, but you may have to climb to see them. Don’t let His goodness pass you by in this season.

If you are feeling some apathy or distance from God, you aren’t alone. This has been difficult, but it’s time to begin again. Climb the rock.

Intentional things you could do to climb:

No matter what…just keep climbing.
