It was cold at the cabin last night. Our furnace kept tripping, and because of the lousy insolation, it would get cold quickly. Five or six times, I woke up, crawled over my son who was sleeping with his head inches from the electrical box, hit reset and wait for things to reboot so the furnace would turn on. My son would moan and roll over, still fast asleep.
I called the furnace guy in the morning, and when he came the problem wasn’t the furnace at all. It was the circuit box that was inches from my son’s head. As I would later find out, it could have easily caught fire. Yet, in my frozen stupor, I was repeatedly flipping the switches trying to trick the furnace into working.
When the electrician came, he changed some pieces out. It works like new and my son’s sweet little head is safe as he sleeps.
It made me wonder…where are we playing with fire and don’t even know it? Are there some things in our lives that we need to change out?
Your connection with God can get corroded by seemingly small things that steal our gaze. It may be bitterness towards a friend, drinking to numb your anxiety, a wick of anger towards your kids that seems to be lit easier than it should be, or maybe it’s the married guy at your work that is giving you more attention.
Ask God to reveal what’s off. It might not be a whole-house rewiring that we need. Maybe there are parts that are dangerous or corroded and getting in the way. Swap them out, regain connection, and live free.
