Naming who God is takes our eyes off ourselves and what we lack and sets our gaze on His abundance. It’s the best way to live. It’s my favorite way to pray.
One person begins, and then others join in and say what is true about God’s character. It gives a space to speak aloud and confirm the truth about God. It grows my picture of Him. If someone prays, “God, You are the great provider,” although I know that’s true, it allows me to consider if I am living as if it is.
If you are someone who doesn’t often pray out loud without a script, this may be a place to start. You could pray your traditional dinner prayer and then invite your family to each say one thing that is true about God.
- God, You are kind.
- God, You are trustworthy.
- God, You are vast.
- God, You are close.
- God, You are set apart.
You can integrate the “God You Are” prayer into many different parts of your day or groups that you lead.
- On the way to school
- At the dinner table
- Before a game
- As you part ways with your spouse in the morning
- Before bed
- When you get anxious, nervous, or afraid
I long to recenter my heart on the Author of my life. In the weeks of uncertainty that lay ahead, let’s remember who our God is. He is your certainty in the uncertain. God dearly loves you. He has a plan for your life. You can trust Him.
Would His name be made great as we remember God You are…
HLLF,
