One of my favorite things about this time of year is the Christmas music floating through all of life’s different channels… at the store, on TV, in the restaurants, in my car. I could have it playing in my home constantly and not become numb to the same musical lyrics. If you can’t relate to me right now, come on! Suck it up for the next 3 weeks and act like you like it 🙂 .
My favorite might be “Little Drummer Boy.” The image the words bring to my mind is so beautiful. The song also answers a question that many of us could be asking this time of the year.
“What do I have of value that I could bring to Jesus?”
If this time of the year is truly all about Jesus, what can I bring to Him that actually matters?
Take a look at the lyrics below. A little shepherd boy, with “nothing” of value, gets to meet Jesus. If you take out the pum, pum, pums, the sweet words go like this…
Come they told me,
A newborn king to see.
Our finest gifts we bring
To lay before the King
So to honor him
When we come.
Little baby
I am a poor boy too.
I have no gift to bring
That’s fit to give our King.
Shall I play for you?
Mary nodded.
The ox and lamb kept time,
I played my drum for him.
I played my best for him.
Then he smiled at me,
Me and my drum.
When you think about it, no matter the level of success we have achieved in this life, we all come to Jesus “poor” with “no gift to bring.” What do you bring a King when you have nothing?
We bring our best. Said another way…. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if you are working for God, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23).
I love the phrase “Whatever you do.” Whether we are a high paid executive or a person struggling to find our way in life, every person is called to work our very best for God’s honor. That is the best gift we can give Him.
So as we approach these weeks leading up to Christmas, let’s bring God our best. Our best kindness, our best patience, our best diligence at work. Let’s pray for God to help us extend the best versions of ourselves to others so that we give God a gift that is truly worthy of a King. HLLF – Melissa
