As we watched church online this week, my six-year-old opened the Bible to Exodus to follow along, and in her kindergarten speak said, “Then Pharaoh said, ‘Let my people go.'”

She had the right characters…even the right phrase…but that wasn’t at all how the story goes.

It made me wonder how many of the things we believe to be true about God are just a little bit off. Things we think come from the Bible, but the discrepancies in a time like this mean everything.

When you lose your job…you need to know what is actually true about God.

When your health is failing…you need to know what is actually true about God.

When you are at your wit’s end, and you used to like the people in your home, but now weeks into this, you can barely stand them…you need to know what’s actually true about God.

We need more than the God that we heard about at our grandmother’s church at sunrise service when we were kids. We need more than Bible verses posted to social media that offer little bits of hope.

We need God to intersect our lives. We need Him to reveal Himself moment by moment and tell us what to do. How can the God you have heard about become the God that you know?

God will speak to you through His Word. That Bible on your shelf will come alive if you ask God and open it up. Open to Psalms, ask God to speak to you, and read little by little every day. Try Psalms 16, 27, 62, 63, 84 or 139. Ask God to illuminate the text, and then do what it says…little by little. You may be surprised that rather than a God of compliance, He is a God of love, so the things He may tell you first will likely be, “Trust Me,” rather than a rule to follow.

You could jump into The Good Gospel Study we are hosting for the next four weeks. Even if you don’t join the study and just click through and watch the videos, I believe God will reach into your life. This is also the easiest time ever to go to church. Check out an online church service and if you don’t know where to start, try this.

May the God that you have heard about become the God that you know. In the thick, you will find Him to be the God you can trust, and as you watch Him deliver you, the God that you love.
