As we drove to school, our kids laid out their “this is who I want to be when I grow up” list.
Year after year, Henry always wants to be a pilot. Graham wants to be a football player. Samantha had a massive wave of personal growth this past year and has upgraded from dreaming of being Hello Kitty (not only fictional but also not even human) to now wanting to be a cheerleader for Graham’s football team. As she made her announcement, Graham’s smile grew wide…while Henry pointed out that their overlap in college would only be two years so choosing that as her “career” could be better thought out. Teddy wants to be Santa when he grows up. I mean, why not! He thinks his siblings are crazy for choosing anything other than Santa.
Melissa’s oldest wants to be a sports commentator. Her second wants to be a scientist and create the first real Iron Man suit. Ella, her youngest says she wants to do everything.
While the world pressures us to pick, Ella’s “everything” leaves us well positioned to say, “God, anything,” and that might be just where we best place our dreams.
As we see glimmers of who God created us to be, let’s approach the future saying, “I want to position myself so that if God called me to do anything, it would be as easy as possible me for me to say yes,” holding loosely to my plans, knowing that the free life rests in His. As I get to know more and more of our God, I long to hand Him the reigns, and as I do my honest, “Yes God, anything,” becomes everything.
