I asked my kids if they were the mom and could do anything, what would they do? Thinking of the unlimited possibilities that were at their disposal, my first son piped up and said, “We think we would rather be the dad.”
Nice. Not what I was looking for.
When I look back and the things my mom taught me, I would beg to differ.
My mom taught me to be kind, because no matter who she was talking to, she treated them just as nicely as she treated us. My mom taught me to be selfless because she looked out for us girls before herself, always. My mom taught me to work hard because I saw her work hard. My mom taught me to join in on the causes that you believe in because she consistently jumped in to help. My mom taught me not to gossip when I listened to her talk with her friends. My mom taught me how to treat my husband when I watched how she treated my dad.
This list could go on and on.
So no matter what my kids think, I’d rather be the mom because my life is a book my kids are reading day in and day out. As I fold the laundry, prep our days, drive them for hours on end and follow my dreams, they read my life like a book. They know where to find me when they come looking for me in the mornings when they wake up, and I’m the last one who gets to kiss their heads at night.
I hope they remember the good things, but no matter what…I’d always pick to be mom.
