I met my husband for breakfast yesterday, and the couples sipping their coffee at the cafe looked so comfortable. I dreamed of sitting there too, with my coffee warm in my hands, talking about the weather.
Comfort can be tricky, almost hypnotizing. There was a phase when I lived to maintain comfort. I wanted everything and everyone to be okay, but when we get too comfortable, we become blinded by it. We start to believe that we don’t need much, so we don’t look further. Our noses become filled with pleasant aromas, and we don’t desire more than the current feeling of this soft comfy blanket of a life.
After a while, the perfume smell fades. We think we should be comfortable looking at all the niceties we’ve gathered around us, but our hearts never feel full. We believe the next thing will fill us: a different house, a husband who behaves better than the one we have now, maybe more kids. We believe that then we will have “arrived,” but a real authentic experience that should be satisfying is always right around the bend…and it will remain there, until we stop chasing the next thing, drop our plans, and run into the arms of our God.
There are places no one but God can take you.
When we run into someone’s arms, we trust them to catch us and pick us up. It’s the same with running into the arms of our God. We must choose faith to the point of being uncomfortable, where we rely on Him to pick us up, where we stop fabricating happy and live abiding in His love.
If not, we will believe we are okay and experiencing all that life has to offer, when actually we are only experiencing what is masking real, authentic life…where we live relying on our Maker, which may be rocky, but is a life lived.
If we want to stir the water and live alive, we can ask our God to awaken our hearts.
I didn’t feel this desire on my own, but when I started asking God to give me a passion for Him, He answered. We can ask our God to give us that desire, to fill our hearts to overflowing with love for Him. When it seems there is no way, God is the One who makes a way; He can revive your heart and give you a desire for Him that you may have never experienced before.
This is a prayer He would want to answer. This is the life I never knew I always wanted.
