When my oldest was two, we were sitting on a blanket outside practicing animal sounds. You know…

“What does a cow say?”

Smart child replies… “Moo.”

Momma claps.

You know the drill.

Things that you do with your first born that no other sibling gets. Anyway, we got to the snake, and I asked, “What does a snake say?” And Cole’s reply, “Eat the Apple.”

Hmmm… Yes, he did.

Even at two, he had heard the story of Adam and Eve and the snake, and the fall and he remembered the story.  The snake did say, “Eat the Apple,” and then goes the rest of the Bible. The rest of humanity.

What hit me in that moment was something we all know but need to be reminded of… no matter how little, they remember what you say, they learn what you teach, and they understand the stories.

So mommas, what stories are you telling your children?

If you find talking to your kids about Jesus daunting, or if you feel as though you don’t even know where to begin, let me give you a few fun resources to get you going.  There are comfortable places to start where you can easily teach the truth of Jesus in a way your kids will remember and embrace.  You don’t have to be a bible scholar, a perfect role model, or the mom of the year to teach your children the true stories of the Bible.  You just have to do it.

I have three books that I love for kiddos.  They are engaging and easy to read.  This summer, grab one of these books and make it your goal to share a little bit of the best story ever.

1.  Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name

This book is perfect for ages Pre-School through 6th grade.  It has been a staple in our home and has been read over and over again.  It’s a  fun and simple read which shares the story of the Greatest Rescuer, Jesus.  The Storybook bible starts with Adam and Eve and goes through the New Testament sharing the important and engaging bible stories along the way.

2.  Indescribable: 100 Devotions for Kids About God and Science

Kids love cool information.  This book shares fun science facts and teaches the truth about the characteristics of God at the same time. Letting your kids see that God is a powerful, purposeful, personal, unparalleled Creator. It’s written as a daily devotional, so you can bite off a little of this book at a time.  Each day has a bible verse, fun science story, a lesson about God, and then a prayer you can share with your kiddos.  This book is recommended for ages 6-10.

3.  Love Does for Kids

This is a fun summer book to read with your kids!  Bob Goff has a heart filled with childlike faith, enthusiasm, and unique whimsy, and he shares his entertaining stories to encourage all of us. My kids have loved following his real-life stories and how he saw Jesus in the every day.  There is something about listening to this book that has left my kids feeling empowered to do things that will make a difference in the world around them.  It helps them see that faith and action can make a big difference, even if you are just a kid.  Suggested ages are 6-12, but everyone will love the stories shared here!
