How can I follow God if I don’t know what He is saying…if I can’t see where He is leading or what He wants me to do?
It’s the worst-best case scenario…the worst because we would want to know how the big story turns out and how we’ll get there…but the best because when we can’t see the way forward we have to trust our God. It’s an opportunity to develop that trust and muscle of faith.
When you don’t know where to go or what to do, with your eyes on God, just do the next thing. The best way to learn to follow His direction is when you don’t know where you are going.
When you pull up Google Maps and type in your destination, it tells you what to do in the next 400 feet. Could we learn to follow God that way? What if we stopped trying to control how things were ultimately going to end up, if we surrendered the address and said, “Okay God…lead me forward,” and then followed 400 feet at a time? If we learn to follow God with the small everyday steps, those small follows strung together may become life’s most significant road trips…but it takes training to teach our hearts to yield in the seemingly small follows along the way.
If you can’t hear God in the big, pressing decisions, practice trying to hear Him in the little ones…and over time you will learn to hear the voice of your God. Ask Him about things that seem even too small for His attention. The small follows lead us to our destination.
In following God, trust Him enough to believe that He will show up. Trust that He is building patience when His voice seems quiet. Trust Him with your very next step.
I needed to learn the follow 400 feet at a time before I could learn to hear and follow in the bigger decisions, and honestly I still don’t know where I am headed…but I know Who I am headed towards and that, my friend, is all that matters.
The ultimate existence with my ultimate God, the ultimate destination…I will follow Him…often 400 feet at a time.
