We were in Washington, D.C., over the holidays, and my favorite way to explore is to run. I notice so much more when the wind is hitting my cheeks, allowing my mind to slow and my eyes to see. It was drizzling outside, so we put on nearly everything we brought and started running.

I like to set out with the expectation of, “Let’s see where this goes.” It leaves me space to be pleasantly surprised at whatever comes my way, which might be as simple as the notice of a tree still green with wax-covered leaves when everything around it is brown from the winter cold. That morning, just as we would get past the next tall building, a new monument was right around the corner, and if we hadn’t kept running, we would have missed it.

When we consider God, I wonder if the way we start to run with Him is meant to be like that run. Rather than a list of expectations saying, “This is what you need to do to know God,” could we hold loosely to how it will all unfold? Could we say, “God, I want to see You,” and just start running with eyes set on Him?

If you start running with your eyes on God, I trust that He will whisper to you where to go. If you listen and make a pattern of quiet “Yes’s” over and over…He will lead…but to see the places you have to run.

You may not know what His voice sounds like yet, or what following God feels like, and you may doubt if He would speak to you, or if He speaks at all.

Run with your eyes on the God you have heard of, who will become the God that you know. I don’t know what you will see or how long it will take, but I am certain that if you stay home, you for sure won’t see anything at all.
