My nephew is really into police and his Great Aunt welded him a little safe filled with jewels for him to play cops and robbers. Over the 4th of July a firework went off, and in a mad run for the house the safe came open, spilling out the jewels. I ran to look for them in an area with rocks, bushes, and a large fountain. I climbed under the stairs and around the landscaping and although they were small and surrounded by a lot of different debris, those tiny jewels gleamed, illuminated by the setting sun. It’s a picture that has stuck in my mind these last few weeks.
It makes me think about what God wants from us. Among the rocks, tucked into our little areas of even seemingly small influence, our God wants us to reflect His glory. He doesn’t ask us to muster up something wonderful and shine it out like the Care Bears from the ’80s, which I think is what we try to do at times…looking to express His glory from within ourselves, exuding what is unsustainable, and that isn’t even what is asked of us. We are asked to reflect and when we do, we reflect His glory, gleaming among the rocks. The reflection of God in our lives, on its own, will tell the story of our great God. It will tell of the great things He has done. It will be a life of worship, and that is what my God asks of me.
Those little jewels spread around the stairs were doing nothing but staying in their purest form. Unmuddled by what was around them, available to reflect. It’s what I feel God is asking of me. Will I stay connected to His light, placed where He has asked me to stay, resting there and reflecting His glory? With eyes set on my Savior, will I allow Him to break through the darkness, reflecting His glory His power in my small life among the rocks? The jewels, though small in size, gleamed and were easy to identify. It causes me to ask, “How is my reflection?”
How brightly are we reflecting among the rocks? What could we purify in our heart of hearts so that when the light shines upon us our souls gleam? That is all that God is asking of us. He is asking us to reflect His power, not to find it within ourselves to do all of the good things and spew it out to others. He is asking us to reflect, like jewels among the rocks.
Maybe your first step toward reflecting His glory is simply to seek Him…to proceed forward and say, “Maybe? Maybe, God, You are a thing, and if You are…I might want to know what that means.” Ask Him. Reflect. Maybe your follow has gotten dusty. Brush it off and ask God to reflect a love that is compelling in your life. Maybe you are reflecting…then my friend…stay…stay among the rocks and gleam with the glory of your God.
How is your reflection? This is the free life. This is the life I never knew I always wanted.
